Medical Marijuana Regulation Conference
Marijuana Regulation: Policy and Business Considerations
On May 24, 2016, Wildeboer Dellelce LLP, together with LaBarge Weinstein LLP and Dundee Capital Markets presented Marijuana Regulation in Canada: Policy and Business Considerations. The conference featured a lineup of industry experts with keynote by Member of Parliament and former City of Toronto Chief of Police Bill Blair who also serves as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and has recently been charged with overseeing the setting up of a federal-provincial task force tasked with creating a plan for the legalization of cannabis in Canada.
The conference was held at the Omni King Edward Hotel in Toronto on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 and included Bruce Linton (CEO, Canopy Growth Corporation), Debbie Weinstein (LaBarge Weinstein LLP), Andrea Hill (Wildeboer Dellelce LLP), Lynn Pratt (Audit and Advisory, Deloitte LLP), and a panel of licensed producers led by Dundee Capital Markets and featuring representatives from Canopy, Aphria and Organigram.
The conference explored business and policy perspectives on Canada's medical and future recreational marijuana legislative regimes. Canada has the potential to change the status quo among industrialized countries in liberalizing the regulation of recreational marijuana at a federal level. The impact on public safety, health care and local economies has already been witnessed in areas of the United States where recreational marijuana has been legalized. Publicly traded licensed producers of marijuana command market capitalizations of tens to hundreds of millions while most analysts estimate the size of the recreational market in Canada at $4-5 billion.
