Al Wiens

Overview
Al is a partner practising in the areas of corporate and securities laws. Al has a great deal of experience with respect to corporate finance and public and private mergers and acquisitions, as well as advising in respect of corporate and securities regulatory compliance matters. Al regularly advises public and private issuers, broker/dealers, activist shareholders, directors and officers and special committees of an issuer’s board of directors on the legal and strategic aspects of special transactions, shareholder disputes and the proxy solicitation process.
Al is a member of the firm’s M&A and Corporate Governance Practice Groups and a member of the Professional Standards Committee.
Prior to entering law school, Al worked in the Ontario electrical industry. He later articled in the legal department at Ontario Power Generation before joining the corporate finance department where, among other things, he drafted physically and financially settled power purchase and other commodity agreements. As a member of the legal, corporate, risk/regulatory and trading teams, his role was to help the company become a dominant player in the energy industry.
Al is an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School, where he has taught Commercial Law, Corporate Finance and Securities Regulation. He regularly speaks at conferences and seminars on a variety of topics within his practice areas. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada for his work in Mining and in Securities Law. Al has completed the Osgoode Certificate in Mining Law program at Osgoode Hall Law School.
