Sanjeev Patel

Sanjeev (he, him) is a Partner practising in the areas of corporate and commercial law, securities and debt products, with an emphasis on corporate finance transactions, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and corporate governance.

Sanjeev represents a number of public and private corporations across a variety of industries, including financial services, healthcare, technology, retail and natural resources. He regularly advises clients on a broad spectrum of transactions, including domestic and cross-border financings and M&A transactions, corporate restructurings and reorganizations, proxy contests and secured lending transactions. Sanjeev also assists clients with regulatory filings and their dealings with provincial and territorial securities commissions and Canada’s stock exchanges.

Mandates that Sanjeev has been involved with include acting for:

• Mount Logan Capital Inc. in its all-stock business combination with 180 Degree Capital Corp., creating a combined company listed on NASDAQ valued at approximately US$122.7 million.
• Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) in connection with Rogers Communications Inc.’s $4.7 billion acquisition of BCE Inc.’s interest in MLSE.
• MLSE in connection with OMERS’ US$400 million investment in MLSE.
• Integrated Grain Processors Corp. in connection with its acquisition by Alco Energy Canada for a transaction value of over $300 million by way of a court-approved plan of arrangement.
• Comwave Networks Inc. in its acquisition by Rogers Communications Inc.
• DLK on Avenue in its acquisition by MedSpa Partners.

Sanjeev previously served on the Ontario Securities Commission’s Continuous Disclosure Advisory Committee and completed a six-month secondment in the OSC’s Corporate Finance Branch.

Prior to his call to the Bar, Sanjeev practised as a pharmacist in both Manitoba and Ontario. He draws on his scientific background and analytical skills to assist clients in understanding and assessing risk, with a view to finding practical legal and business solutions.

Having started his legal career at WD as an Articling Student, Sanjeev is now Chair of the Student Committee and is also actively involved with WD’s diversity and inclusion initiatives and continuing legal education endeavours.

Sanjeev is actively involved in community and philanthropic initiatives. He is a Trustee of Golf Canada Foundation with particular interest in making the sport accessible to children from underserved communities and increasing opportunities for women and girls to take up, and stay in, the game. Sanjeev also coaches in the Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association, where his approach emphasizes team building and creating enthusiasm about coming to the rink.

Outside of the office, Sanjeev enjoys experimenting in the kitchen (with varying degrees of success) and seeing his children’s excitement as they discover new things.
